Lab policies - acceptable use

This section is important. Please read and follow these guidelines when using the lab. Repeated failure to do so could result in loss of lab privileges.

I. General Computer Use

  • When you are finished using a machine, please remember to log yourself off.

  • No software is to be added or removed from the lab machines. If you would like to see some particular piece or type of software added to the lab machines, please talk with Nina or the computer liaison.

  • The computer lab machines are not to be used for long-term file storage. Your files are not guaranteed to be safe on any of the lab machines. USB flash drives and/or external USB hard drives are your best choice. Each student can request an individual storage folder of up to 500 MB for school related work on the department servers. If you feel you need additional long-term storage for a special project, please speak with Nina or the computer liaison.

  • The printers in the computer lab are intended for those printing class papers, research papers or other items related directly to school work. Please do not waste paper and toner. Also, if you are printing out drafts of papers please remember to use double-sided mode to save on paper.

II. Computer Room Behavior

  • Since the computer lab is intended for students actively doing work, please try to behave accordingly. This includes keeping conversations held in the lab to computer related issues and at a low volume. Please try to hold other conversations elsewhere.

  • For the same reason outlined above, if you are just "browsing the web" or checking your email, please use the computers in the departmental library or the RA office.

III. Computer Room Upkeep

  • The manuals for the software in the computer room should stay there always. It is allowed to take manuals to the office for copying, but they are not to leave the department.

  • Once you have used a manual, please return it to the bookshelf. Try not to leave piles of books on the computer tables.

  • Please try to keep the computer room as clean as possible. This includes not leaving stray paper laying around on the tables or in the printer output tray.
Limit your eating and drinking in the lab (cups without lids are not allowed) - food garbage MUST be cleaned up after consumption. All users are expected to clean up after themselves. If cups of any kind are found unattended or trash removal becomes a problem, food and drink will not be allowed it the lab.

Procedures

This section contains information on how to perform common tasks. If you would like to suggest the inclusion of more, please send an email to Nina Agopian or the compter liaison.

Obtaining an account for the department network

All registered economics graduate students are assigned an account (user name and password) through the JHU Enterprise Directory (JHED). These same credentials are used for the economics computer lab access. If you are having problems logging to the lab computers please contact Nina Agopian.

Please see the section Setting up your Johns Hopkins e-mail account for additional information.

Logging on and off the department network

To use the PC's in the lab you must have a valid JHED/JHEM account. To bring up the logon screen you may need to press <ctrl>-<alt>-<del> simultaneously. Please note that passwords are case sensitive. When you are finished with a machine please be sure to log off. To do so, click on the "Start" button on the taskbar at the lower left corner of the screen and then select "Shut Down". From the list of options select "log off." You can log off also by pressing <ctrl>-<alt>-<del> simultaneously and then choosing the "log off" option.

Accessing your department account from a remote location

  1. Click here to download and install the VPN client on your remote computer
Note: Check the JHSecure VPN Client F.A.Q. for additional instructions and troubleshooting.

  2. From the remote computer, logon to the university network via the VPN client, using your JHU email username and password

  3. Once you are connected, go to Windows Explorer, right-click My Network Places and select Map Network Drive

  4. In the Folder field, enter the following path: \\EconApps.econ.jhu.edu\users\YourFolderName. For Mac users, you can refer to this page

  5. In the same window, click where it says "Connect using a different username"

  6. In the new window, enter your username as "win\YourJHEDUsername" and your JHED password; click OK

  7. Click Finish; your personal folder on the department server should now be mapped and accessible from Windows Explorer

Passwords

Passwords are assigned at the initial university account set up at http://my.johnshopkins.edu/ - click on the "First Time Logon" tab. If you need to change your password at a later time please go to http://my.johnshopkins.edu/ and look for the "reset my password" field after clicking on the "First Time Logon" tab. Please make sure you have read the password complexity requirements on the same page.

Printing

There is a printing allowance of 400 pages ($12) per month allocated to everyone using the computer lab. Anything above that is charged as follows: 3c/page for printing pages 400 through 600 and 6c/page for anything above 600 pages. In the beginning of each month during the school year (September through May) all printing accounts get credited with $12. The unused portion of the balance for any given month accumulates through the school year and can be used any time by the beginning of the next school year. At that time all accounts revert back to the initial $12 for the first month. Anyone who has a negative balance that has not been paid as of the beginning of the school year is supposed to pay that balance before the school year begins again.

There are two printers available for use in the lab. At times it may be necessary to switch between printers either to choose a different one with different capabilities or because one is in use. To do so you typically only need to select a different printer from the options box on the print menu. You can also change your default printer by clicking on the "Start" button then "Settings" and then "Printers". To set a printer as default, right-click on the printer and select "Set as Default".

It is also useful to print double-sided at times. If you are printing out drafts, web pages or working papers please use double-sided mode to conserve paper. To do so, you first need to select the "HP Laserjet" printer. Then select "Properties". Typically you will then be presented with a choice of Duplexing options including none, flip short side and flip long side. You will usually want to select "flip long side".

Virus Scanning

To protect your home computer and ours you may occasionally need to perform virus scans. The Virus Shield on our computers will usually intercept incoming viruses from diskettes but it may still be useful to perform the scans manually occasionally. To do so, open up Norton AntiVirus by clicking on the "Start" button, then "Programs", "Norton Antivirus", and then "Norton Antivirus" again. From the drive selection box check the box for the a: drive if you are scanning your floppy or the d: drive if you are scanning your zip disk. then click on the "Scan Now" button. The program will notifiy you when it is done if it finds any viruses. If so please notify Nina Agopian or the computer liaison.
