The job market in the economics profession is extraordinarily well-organized and jobs for PhD economists have been plentiful for many years. The process works as follows. Students who are near completion of (or have completed) their Ph.D. will schedule first-round interviews that take place at the annual meetings of the American Economic Association. This occurs in early January. Shortly thereafter, students will be selected for campus visits where they will give a seminar on their research and spend the day visiting the institution. Job offers are largely made during the months of February and March and the market typically clears in March.

The department invests considerable resources to effectively guide and assist students in this process. Two faculty members are assigned the task of job market coordinators. They assist our job market candidates in writing a curriculum vitae (what is called a resume in most other professions). The vita of all of our students on the job market will be put together in a job market packet which is then mailed to approximately 300 academic and non-academic institutions. This information can also be accessed from our web site. Given the reputation of Hopkins, we regularly receive phone calls from institutions looking to hire and the entire faculty assists in responding to these calls and matching up students with openings. Prior to the first round interviews, students engage in mock interviews with two faculty members who provide feedback to the student. In preparation for the campus visits, students give a 90-minute seminar to faculty and students. By that time, students will have already given several seminars during their time here.

The department has consistently placed all of its students in quality academic and non-academic positions. Graduates of the last 20 years hold tenured positions at such places as Brown University, University of California at Irvine, University of Maryland, and a chaired professorship at Claremont McKenna. You can access a list of our recent placements which include research universities (such as UC-Davis and Texas), liberal arts colleges (such as Williams College and William & Mary), and non-academic institutions (such as the Federal Reserve Board of Governors and International Monetary Fund).
